dude if we can just engineer a very large roof over top that  canyon and fill it part way with water   it could be a very nice place to live  with fishes and birdies

I presume the canyon referred to in the song is Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. Google it and be astounded at the strange goings-on there back in the 60s. We may even have a thread about it here.
