The showers at the night shelter aren’t working tonight, so I traveled across town to a McDonald’s restaurant to freshen up in their restroom. There are several McDonald’s closer, but they’re wary of the homeless shitting everything up, and not without reason.
I got back just in time to watch them serve the last plate of dinner to the guy in line ahead of me.

They fed the veterans one decent breakfast. Every other day, the veterans eat the same slop as everyone else.

There’s a new leech who absolutely cannot hear the words “I don’t have it” in response to her insistent mooching. I was lying down across the car seat with my feet sticking out the open passenger side door whilst running the pop stand today, and this broad had the audacity to reach past me into my car and grab my pack of cigarettes off the center console. She damn near had my last smoke in her mouth in the time it took me to raise up and grab it from her. The absolute fucking nerve of some people. Most of the old leeches have been run off, but these new ones are fucking brazen.

I made about $10 selling pops today. I need to make $50 at the flea market tomorrow.

I just can’t help thinking the resources poured into this outfit by the donors are being misappropriated. I can’t chalk it up to incompetence alone because it doesn’t take a genius to give 200 some odd people two hots and a cot everyday. They literally have one job.

They lock the bathroom at the night shelter, and you either have to knock until someone inside gets a hand free to open it, or wait for a staff member to come open it. They keep it locked because someone flushed something they shouldn’t have down the toilet once upon a time.
I’ve peed in the water fountain twice because I couldn’t hold it any longer. Apparently peeing looks the same as taking a drink on the security cameras because I haven’t been busted. Guys get busted peeing in the trash cans all the time.

I can see where some of the maintenance issues are due to vandalism or misuse or what have you. But a lot of others are due to neglect. The water pumps for the showers aren’t working for whatever reason. The raised shower floors leak water all over the floor due to worn caulking. All the big coffee urn needs is a fuse to get it working.

Oh that's damn near guaranteed...
I dunno the exact statistics, but most of the funds donated to such ventures only end up going to the true cause like 20% of the time.

I’ll be all right. Tomorrow I’m going where people are having fun, and have money to spend. You know, the real world.

Oh hell yeah!!! Soak up that sweet energy, Dev... I love flea markets because it's the consumerist heaven that Americans love, only it's all about slashing prices and everybody being their own ma & pop shop for a blessed few glorious days. People at the flea market are usually cool, but there's always some rung-below "People of WalMart" in the mix too. It should be a fabulous spectacle.

The little grocery store where I buy 20 pound bags of ice for $2 was sold out this morning, so I had to settle for an overpriced 7 pound bag of convenience store ice.
I was in the flea market parking lot for less than an hour when a couple of guys rolled up in a golf cart and told me they don’t allow people to sell in their parking lot. I moved to a vacant lot across the street where a few people were selling puppies and watermelons. This was on a long, empty stretch of a broad thoroughfare with no foot traffic.
When someone gives you a business idea, ask them if they’ve ever done it themselves and whether it worked out.
I decided to try the lake. One side of the lake is bounded by a high levee or sea wall with a one-lane road and bicycle path on top of it. I figured I could catch some thirsty joggers or bicyclists there. There were quite a few people out, but nobody stopped.
I went to the night shelter parking lot, where I eventually sold two pops. It was getting close to check-in time by then, so I decided to call it a day.
The showers aren’t working again tonight, and they want us to go easy on the water. I squirted some body wash on a washcloth and got it wet in the water fountain, then went back to my bunk and wiped down from face to waist. I’m gonna try to surreptitiously wipe the rest of me down before the evening is through.

Saturday, a cold front rolled through, bringing rain. The high temperature has been in the mid-80s, with chilly nights, for the past few days.
Today, I went to the ER. The doctor prescribed me an antibiotic shot and pills for 15 days. He also ordered refills on my existing prescriptions, and set me up with a primary care doctor and wound care.
The showers are finally working tonight. I feel like a new ghoul.

I ran the car battery down again, this time by leaving a fully charged iPhone plugged in.
Scott’s truck was the first to bite the dust today. It started and drove twice this morning, then wouldn’t start again. He paid $110 to have it towed from the day shelter to the night shelter, a distance of less than a mile. The towing company is next door to the night shelter too.
Later, he was on the phone with someone who told him which wires to jiggle, and it started. After his battery charged, he gave me a jump start.

So do you have any appointments lined up with the VA yet for surgery in the future or just to make sure you're okay??

I was unable to meet my payment arrangement on the self storage unit last week. Now they’re demanding the full $335, or they’re going to auction off my stuff.

This place is overrun with dogs. When I arrived about a month ago, a few people had dogs. Then everybody and his brother decided he needed a fucking dog. As in you can’t feed yourself, but you’re gonna take care of a dog.
The day shelter and night shelter both have kennels. Today, the biggest legion of staffers and volunteers I’ve ever seen turned out at the night shelter to do what? Fix the human accommodations? No. To tear down and rebuild the kennels.
They apparently put a new fuse in the coffee urn though. This morning, they had coffee that was basically brown water.
