Oh dude I was soooo infatuated with Zane, I thought he was soooo hot.

Lol, wow, that was like 100 million years ago.

Crazy how much time has gone by and things are so different now.

I think it's really fun to write an ongoing commentary of your life and everybody else's life...

It's cool to look back on, it makes you realize how much shit has really happened.

Sometimes it's hard to keep it all straight and remember where you've been, who you've known...

I like it.

The Zane saga was so awesome. So was the chat. I bet this thread was really good too. I haven't read it though. I came here just recently.

That shit was fun. Obsessive and totally unhealthy but so fun, wouldn't take it back.

Zane is my friend. I don't intend on giving any details as to his whereabouts because I think it's obvious to everyone by now, he doesn't want to be found. Also because I simply do not know where the hell he's at right now, lol. It's been a few months since I last saw him. I'm not commenting to discuss where he has been or where he might be now. I just wanna tell a Zane story and I think y'all might appreciate it. I'm going to change the locations of where this actually took place and just be vague about the city instead, to try and respect his privacy. This was one of the more recent times he and I hung out but not the last time. Here's my story;

Breakfast just got real

Last week a friend of mine Zane was riding a train heading north towards the city I live in. We had plans to hang out but there's no guarantee the train stops in this city, as it just ain't one of those types of trains that lets passengers off in specific cities. Sometimes they stop for other reasons, sometimes they blow right through. Unfortunately the train he was on blew right through town. He texted me and said he got off 200 miles north of here when the train reached it's final destination. I wanted to hang out with my boy so I told him I'd be driving up that evening. I got into town around 10pm and met up with him. We went and got tacos and caught up on things.

He had been traveling for over a week on trains and sleeping in fields, he was pretty dirty. I thought he'd appreciate a shower and a bed for a night so I got us a hotel room. I just chose a random hotel. Upon arriving, the concierge told us they served breakfast from 6-9am. Full spread, eggs bacon sausage biscuits and gravy, waffles, the whole nine. Anticipating breakfast, I told him I wanted to set an alarm for 5:50 am so we could be early rather than showing up late and having less of a selection of items.

We walk into the hotel lobby dining area at 6:08am and there's about a dozen guys with matching shirt logos. They appear to work in some sort of trade, I assumed construction. They were already sitting and eating. Zane and I got our plates and sat down to eat. Zane sat at a table facing the group of men, I sat across the table from him so my back was to the men and most of the room. I began eating my food and I hear Zane strike up a conversation with one of the men.

Zane -You guys doing line work here?

Guy - Nah, we're in the yard today

Z- Right on. I was a lineman, I used to work for such and such company quite a few years ago.

G- Is that right?

Z- Yeah, that's right. Interesting thing about that. At the time, my wife was dying of cancer. She was on chemo but it wasn't going well. My wife was dying, my kids were losing their mother. It was the hardest thing I'd ever gone through.

(As Zane's friend I knew of this difficult time in his life. I hadn't met him till some time later but I was aware he lost his wife to cancer)

Zane continues - Yeah I remember there were a couple guys that weren't worth a shit. Everyone else had to carry their dead weight. The company was already making a case on getting rid of those guys but they hadn't pulled the trigger on it yet. Those guys knew they were on the chopping block too. You know what those brother fucking worms did? They made up some bullshit story about me, that they saw me doing something really unsafe and the company fired me. Hardest fucking time of my life, the insurance from that job was paying for the exorbitant hospital bills for her chemo.

Everything went to shit. My wife died. My kids staying with their grandparents for the time being. I became homeless, I lost everything. My life has never been the same. I've been through so much shit and it all started at that point. Those two piece of shit low down motherfuckers did me as dirty as anybody could ever do anyone just to save their own skin.

(at this point all those working men and myself included are drawn into this story. This is a heavy ass story and you can hear the emotion in Zane's voice)

Zane continues - You know I never thought I'd see you two again..

(the room falls silent. Up until this point you could hear all the little sounds of people eating. Now the room fell dead silent. I couldn't see any of their faces but I wished I could have.)

Z- Your buddy there was in on it but I know you're the one that went to the company. That blood is mostly on your hands, Shannon.

(I hear a man get up from behind me, he exits the dining area and heads out the front doors of the hotel lobby. Zane eyed him the whole way. If looks could kill, he would have been outlined in chalk an hour later)

Z- (Directing his words at Shannon now). I've spent all these years thinking of all the horrible things I'd do to you if I ever had the chance to run into you again. All the things I'd say, all the things I'd do. And here we are. I just wanna let you know that you're a piece of shit brother fucking worm. I wanna let all of you other guys know that too. If you weren't already tired of carrying this guy's weight, now you know what type of guy he really is. This guy will fuck you over the first chance he gets if it saves his skin.

Shannon finally speaks up in a mild tone- Hey they didn't keep me on that job much longer and..

Z (Interrupts Shannon) - Oh I fucking know they didn't. I ran into so n so and he told me they let you go. Doesn't change the fact that you're a brother fucking worm, Shannon.

Zane sits quietly contemplating for a moment. The tension in the room is thick. Nobody is saying anything. Behind Zane's eyes it was almost like I could see what was happening in his brain. I don't think he was thinking of anything outside of murdering that man. That dead silence felt like minutes, it was probably only like 20 seconds but it felt like an eternity to me and I think everyone in that room.

Zane finally speaks again "That's all I've got to say."

Shannon quietly got up and excused himself from the table. He slowly passed by our table just out of arms reach and leaned in and said "I'm really sorry that you lost your wife, Zane" and walked out of the hotel lobby. Zane kept his head straight but his eyes followed Shannon out the door.

We finished our breakfast and went back to the room. We initially planned on going back to sleep after breakfast but after that, neither of us were tired. I did manage to fall asleep for a quick nap eventually, Zane stayed awake. We spoke of it later and he said it was cathartic, that he was grateful he had the chance to tell that guy what he thought of him but even more importantly let that guys co-workers know what a piece of shit he was.

Zane told me that when you call someone a worm in that industry those are fighting words. Apparently that guy saw something in Zane's eyes and didn't have any reason or desire to fight him over it. I think Zane has come a long way, I think a few years ago he probably would have skipped the words and probably ended up catching a case over assaulting that guy.

When he first started telling that story he had the whole room captivated. When he turned that story into "I never thought I'd see you two again" it felt like I was in a fucking movie scene. I wasn't sure if this shit was about to break into a breakfast barroom brawl or what. We were for damn sure outnumbered. The hair on my entire body stood up. It felt like I was in the crowd when Phil Collins was singling out that guy during the song; In the air tonight. Like at one point I'm just listening to a guy sing a song, but then all of a sudden I'm like ohh fuck.. oh fuck he's actually talking about that fucking guy right there!

I realize that song isn't really about that, but we're all familiar with the story I'd imagine. That's how it felt. It felt like Hang 'em High but way more intense. Every time Zane and I end up at a hotel, something weird happens. We got stuck in an elevator the previous time we stayed in one. What are the odds though? The city we were in was a few hundred miles from the city Zane worked with these guys in. What are the odds that I picked the same hotel those guys were staying at? What are the odds we had a run in with them? What if we had breakfast 20 minutes later? We would have never seen those guys. Had the train stopped in my city, we would have never seen those guys. It was as if the universe lined up all of it's stars in a neat little row just for Zane that day.

Nah, he sounds just the same as ever. Assault isn't his thing. If he ever does anything "bad" he gets away with it.

Anyway, cool story, seems like you hobo types like telling stories. A lot of artistic tendencies like writing, music, etc. seem to be prevalent, particularly in the far traveling hobos.

Glad to hear Zane is at least recently alive and kickin'. We thought he was dead for sure. Life is for living so I guess that's what he's doing. Lol. Best not to get too attached to that guy.
