Sol has officially awakened...
Quote:Improbably, sunspots AR3614 and 3615 exploded in tandem on March 23rd around 0130 UT, directing their fire straight at Earth.

They're called "sympathetic solar flares." Occasionally, magnetic loops in the sun's corona fasten themselves to distant pairs of sunspots, allowing explosive instabilities to travel from one to the other. This has apparently happened to AR3614 and AR3615.

A direct hit could spark strong G3-class geomagnetic storms with mid-latitude auroras in the USA and Europe.

It would go better with the disco bodybuilder/gay love-slave aesthetic.

Quote:The white-light sun is a blinding ball of featureless light. But... if you filter the light, and look only at the narrow range of wavelengths emitted by hydrogen, the true sun is revealed. This weekend in Kentucky, amateur astronomer Richard Schrantz used a spectroheliograph to do just that, and here is what he saw:

Quote:Giant sunspot AR3664 keeps hurling CMEs toward Earth. There are now at least 3 storm clouds heading our way. See how many you can count in this 24-hour movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:

A mean looking one indeed.

Gonna pass around the bend fairly soon though, won't be a threat for much longer.
