Fuck character development.

Okay, after going off on a rant, I've been set straight that "character development" doesn't always mean the character has a "good" arc.
The character can "develop" by becoming evil or degrading in some other way. They can make unconventional choices. Any kind of change is apparently character development. But I've always taken it to mean that there's gotta be some kind of moral LESSON. Some kinda "hero's journey" shit where the character figuratively climbs the mountain and reaches... SOMETHING. I dunno. The whole concept just kind of annoys me. But if a character can develop by unconventional means, you know, ANYTHING but marriage, having kids, all that stupid shit, then I am down with it.

I think this is a good time & place to address a certain GIF here on the forum.
![]() This ^^ one. So, all the years I'd been a member here and used ALL KINDSA emojis and GIF's - I don't recall ever using this one. In fact, I never even knew who/what it was. But, last summer, after starting on the show Dexter, it finally hit me. lol Hand to God, until that moment, I always thought it was LL Cool J from that NCIS show he was on. Ya know, a quick scroll past, not really paying much mind. Never saw any of those shows either. Network TV just doesn't do it for me. Feels wrong. With a few exceptions of course. That I won't go into naming. But they're all greatness, I assure. Anyway, thought that was worth a share. And a giggle. ![]()

THAT smilie...
*nods* I had been using it for YEAAARRRSSSS, it was like my thing. And I had NO IDEA where it came from. Imagine my shock when I'm watching Dexter and I'm like OMG!?!?!? That's the fucking "eyes on you" emotie?!?!?1 A lot of people have said they decided to watch Dexter cuz of all the Doakes memes. Sigh. Doakes was an excellent character. If I like any of the characters besides Dex, it's definitely him. Angel is cool too though. Or at least he used to be... guy's a problem this season.

Watching these clips out of context really makes Dexter seem like a psycho. It's kinda strange how you don't notice it when you're watching the full episode and you're all immersed in the story.

TONIGHT'S THE FUCKING NIGHT BITCH.

So lastnight I was listening to Dexter in the Dark, Chapter 19, circa 5:00.
Let me tell you, I LOVE this book. I don't think any other book in the series is going to appeal to me as much. It's all about Dexter trying to figure out the origin of the Dark Passenger as an entity. At one point, he starts going on a bunch of internet searches... I found this whole segment enchanting, for personal reasons. He makes references to coming across unhinged bloggers in his searches and I was like, "Yup that's me!" Very fun. People were SooOoOoOoo hilariously infuriated over the connection made between the Dark Passenger and Moloch in this book. I find it important to note that the book came out in 2007, when the TV show was still new. It makes me wonder if all the bizarre hatred of this book came from propaganda intentionally planted against it. There was so little resemblance between the books and the show after a certain point, VERY early on, so why would they even be concerned with what the hell the books were saying? Maybe it's because they had to credit Jeff continually (and still do to this day). Regardless, there just seemed to be a disproportionate dislike of this particular book. Maybe people really are just that ignorant though. Wouldn't surprise me. How fragile does your worldview have to be to get SOOOO MAD over an author delving into the idea that the root of evil is responsible for phenomena such as the desire to kill?? And I haven't listened to the ENTIRE book yet, but I think it'd be silly to assume Jeff's really drawing the line at biblical references, rather than going EVEN FARTHER BACK in history, to the dawn of time itself. He STARTS THE BOOK at the dawn of time. It's clear that he doesn't believe the origin of the Dark Passenger truly lies within the Moloch mythos. It's just the most well documented origin story in recorded history. That's all. It's that simple. But people had to go full retard and shitcan the book entirely because of their own bias, a hatred of religion I guess. No idea. That's what I'm saying... the level of dismissal doesn't make sense. I like Dexter in the Dark because he hasn't married Rita yet. She's still prominently featured and so are the kids, but it hasn't all been weighed down by matrimony yet. I rate this book 10/10.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter = 9/10 rating.
Dearly Devoted Dexter = 6/10 rating. Dexter in the Dark = 10/10 rating. I'll continue to rate the others as I go along. 11/10 rating is strictly reserved for Dexter: Resurrection. Nothing is gonna top it. |
