Having been in messy relationships of my own and witnessed a lot of other people's messy relationships, the solution is simple for me.
Resist the urge to shack up. If someone tries to pressure you into it, it's a safe bet they're wanting you to save them from some mess they've gotten themselves into, and not because they're really looking to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship.
Which could be put in a more general way: be wary of people who are in survival mode. They're focused on escaping their own mess by any means necessary. You and anyone else they encounter are just a means to that end.
