I don't believe humans are herd animals by default.
In prehistoric times, when there were fewer than a million people on earth, the tribes all spread out. It was rare to even see another person outside your immediate family.
Same thing in the old west. If you could see the smoke from your neighbor's chimney, it was time to move further west.
Cities were built to concentrate the labor needed for industry into one place. Now that all of the industry has moved to China, there's no reason for them to exist.
Most of the socialization modern society forces upon us is pointless. It serves no practical end. Everything they say to rationalize cramming a few million people who have nothing in common into one place is ideological bullshit.
Facebook is bullshit for the same reason. Cramming two billion people who have nothing in common onto one website serves no legitimate purpose.
