They also depended on the wearer blinking a lot to raise them slightly so water could get inside them. You had to remember to take them out before bed because they would stick to your dry cornea and have to be surgically removed.
Then soft disposable lenses became available, and a lot of people stopped wearing glasses.
Makes sense to me.
