I'm fond of the idea of an advanced civilization living under the earth's crust. It's not totally believable, but there's lots of cool lore surrounding the idea, particularly related to Admiral Byrd (famous aviation guy and Antarctica expedition leader from back in the day).
First of all, this "land" actually has a name, which is "Agartha".

What the fuck? Admiral Byrd is no longer on the wiki page. He used to be.
Okay... fuuuuuck... this is QUITE interesting... this interview has been edited, and every single upload is the same edit. The part edited out is Admiral Byrd talking about seeing an advanced civilization under the earth in Antarctica. Here's the edited interview:
In the original version, which is about 25 minutes long, The two gentlemen interviewing him try to make light of the more far out stuff he's saying, but then backtrack when they realize he's speaking in earnest and looking at them with great intensity. I witnessed the longer interview with my own eyes/ears so I know it existed. He talks about seeing spherical flying craft that defy physics, and tall beings who spoke to him telepathically, and that they communicated with him that we (humans) were going to destroy the world if we didn't evolve spiritually and so forth.
Okay, upon further search, I found something that is very similar to what he had said, but it's totally cheesed out with a text-to-voice bot, rendering it absurd. Cathartically, I can see some commenters indicating that the original interview had been deleted or edited, both on the below video and elsewhere along my search. God damn.
Here's the cheesed out jive:
Also, this is kind of cool. The Miles Davis Album titled "Agartha" has a picture of a layer of earth peeling back to reveal a hidden world:

It's interesting to consider the fact that Antarctica (supposedly the entrance to Agartha) is loaded with resources, yet there is no one country on earth who can claim it. It's a complete neutral zone. How is that possible?
At any rate, if there is or was a civilization coexisting with us, it would make sense that it was under the crust! In fact, you'd think we'd all evolve toward that; it's much safer, and closer to a huge energy source in the molten core, etc.
Makes me wonder about underground nuclear testing. I can't imagine how far underground we'd need to go to do that. I mean what kind of massive cavernous spaces would be needed to test supermassive nukes underground???
