I think there's a difference between the occasional one-off spelling mistake and consistently spelling a word incorrectly because you don't know how to spell it and can't be bothered to look things up. It's the latter case that I'm referring to here.
Another one I hate is when "then" is used where "than" is meant. They actually harped on this one in public school English classes back in the day, but it still hasn't been eradicated. Is education ultimately futile for some? If I remember correctly, it's mainly used in a particular region of the U.S., possibly Pennsylvania. It certainly wasn't used where I went to school.
