The only reason to make a cake multilayer is if you want to put different types of frosting or filling between the layers.

I think that's excessive and it should simply all be put on top of the cake.

I love frosting!  In fact I wish I had a cake where the frosting and cake were reversed!  Like where you have frosting on a regular cake you would have cake, and where the cake normally is you have frosting of the same thickness.  Yeah, that’s the ticket!   T
