"Gunsmoke" (1955) - Review & Commentary
S2 E36 - "Daddy-O"

Lol @ this title! WTF?!

0:10 I wonder how many times they filmed this opening title to get the perfect look on his face right during and after that trigger pull? With James Arness, heck I bet it was only once.

1:30 uh oh... is this gonna be one of those "Miss Kitty steps out on Matt" episodes??

2:40 ah okay so this is when Kitty's half-ownership of the Long Branch becomes official.

3:08 I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to stand next to a man that fine.

5:25 how will she know that it's even really him??

6:11 I love it when he grabs her by the shoulders... *heart eyes*

This is the most romantic show I've ever seen.

6:50 Kitty's probably gonna get disappointed.

7:15 oh that's definitely him. If it is, then I suspect there to be a lot of intended meaning behind that iron grip.

7:40 ...

7:50 "Then why'd ya leave, TzZDADDY-OH?"

8:00 I mean it's pretty obvious he heard Kitty half-owns the bar now and thinks it'll be a great place for him to go gamble.

9:09 sounds like lies to me.

9:48 listen to him acting like he doesn't know.

9:50 "I've earned a mighty fine living sluttin' this firecrotch, tzZzDADDY."

10:45 I don't think she likes him that much and I'm sure he'll probably give her even more good reason not to.

11;10 ugh, my God, Kitty can't escape drunken tards no matter where she goes.

12:07 lmao Marshal Dillon is tired of all these toasts.

12:44 the fuck does he mean they'll "settle it" later? What, does he think he can waltz into her life for the first time ever and tell her what to do?? I think not.

14:17 check out this ENTIRE scene. This is a great example of the incredible gift James Arness had... he was able to convey so much just by his subtle facial expressions and body language. It's almost like this totally effortless psychic conveyance of the entire scene... what's going on, how we're supposed to feel about it, etc. There are multiple layers of nuance, but most of the work being done here is through his acting mastery.

The thing is, I'm not even sure "acting" is what you'd call it. It's something so much more. There was this incredible multifaceted approach to the stories on this show. Some of the characters think one thing is going on, but Matt Dillon always knows what's REALLY going on, and somehow just by his movement and a certain gaze, he's able to clue the audience in on the real truth without even saying a word. Never seen anything like it.

14:50 it's as if it's not even a show... like it's real or something. That's how natural and flawless it is. Absolutely incredible.

15:50 uh, yeah, bucko, she's a lady every day of the week. Nobody treats her like she isn't one either. This guy needs to get the hell outta Dodge.

16:28 "Funny. You offer me help the first time in my life I don't need it." Oh my damn.

16:45 regardless of his intentions, he's a massive style cramper. He needs to fuck off.

19:05 okay I officially hate this guy.

19:15 wow he's actually trying to swindle his own daughter.

19:50 lmfao he looked like he wanted to bite his hand. Same.

20:16 oh my God man, holy crap, thank God. Wow. Whew. Dude. Whoa. I just. Agh. Thank God.

21:00 "No woman should be in business anyway." loooool. Oh man. I really hope they embarrass this guy.

22:00 dude he haaaaaates it when this guy touches him, lmao!!! Agh, he's so cringey. So cringe.

25:20 Kitty's definitely got a lot more to be proud of than that guy does.
