Male chimpanzees are thought to rely on memory to determine when they last mated with a particular female. They want to know whether a newborn chimp is likely to be their offspring or not, as they practice infanticide against baby chimps that aren't their own.
Other primates (and other mammals) use different mechanisms to determine whether they could've been the father of a particular child. A particular species of mice, for example, waits exactly 21 days to kill another mouse's offspring.
