When I was quality control checking the DVDs and playing a few seconds of each episode, I noticed that something changed around the very late seasons, probably after 1970... there was something about the cameras or some other method of production that gave you the feeling that it was the '70s. It didn't strike me as a bad thing necessarily, it was just a bit obvious that it was a period piece at that point, whereas before it felt like we were peering through the veil of time on a real scene in the 1800s.
I attribute that change to the equipment they were using, and the guest stars. My suspicion is that in the later years of the show, some of the younger guest stars weren't as masterful as the actors of old. Like I said, I only saw very small excerpts from those later episodes, so I really don't know if it's true or not... will find out eventually.
