"Gunsmoke" (1955) - Review & Commentary
S9 E12 - "The Magician"

0:40 lmao, so as a tarot enthusiast, when I hear "The Magician", I'm thinking about this card... https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c...gician.jpg And as soon as the episode opens, this magician guy is explaining that the Ace of Spades is essentially the "Death" card of the standard 52 card playing deck, which of course features none of the 22 Major Arcana found in the tarot (78 cards).

It just blows my mind... Gunsmoke IS magic.

1:12 are they gonna make old drunkard Louie disappear? That'd be awesome.

If I lived in the Gunsmoke universe, I'd be a (heavily armed) female mystic who lives in a wagon and travels around solo doing psychic/tarot readings. Word.

1:46 it figures drunkard Louie would choose the 5 of Hearts, the tarot equivalent of which is the 5 of Cups, said to be a card about a man who is mourning the loss of his taste for wine... https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c...Cups05.jpg

I've said it before and I'll say it again... it's clear that the people who wrote this show knew about cartomancy and tarot meanings.

2:11 "Oh, the protector of the innocent!" lol, damn right!

2:26 his assistant is so pretty that I hardly mind the hair color... her eyebrows match well enough, so I'll let her pass.

4:30 "Only the small hearted and the frightened are stingy." He's right about that.

4:40 her hair looks slightly more ridiculous out of natural lighting, but meh, at least she's pretty enough to make up for it.

5:30 he's one of the more likable snake oil salesmen who have come to town.

6:02 "I'm only a mirror that reflects what you want to see." Yeah, this episode is gonna be epic.

6:10 he pulls out the 5 of Spades to do a disappearing trick... the card of mental conflict with others, a sense of empty victory when leaving behind the losers of an intellectual battle.

7:36 "But you know, that just might be his greatest illusion." Doc is probably right.

7:50 "Fetch the blacksmith," roflmfao oh dear.

9:03 ooohhh, shit! Tom's a looker!

10:01 hottie Tom draws the Jack of Spades, a card which traditionally speaks of a handsome dark haired young man with potentially ominous intentions.

10:10 7 of Hearts, card of being spoiled for choice, overwhelmed with options, emotional confusion... probably describes this old guy.

10:12 the magician draws the Queen of Diamonds... a rich inner world of resourceful intelligence and pragmatism, someone imbued with a caring nature.

10:35 well on one hand it's too bad her dad is breaking his promise to her, but on the other hand I'm sure she's not too sad about getting to spend some time with Quint!

11:30 lmao this reminds me of the "Window" scene from Little House on the Prairie... https://www.sectual.com/thread-9465.html *dancing banana*

12:18 number 7 numerology means victory.

13:46 yeah, Tom's definitely living up to that Jack of Spades energy.

16:48 https://i.imgur.com/UBLONNG.png ... 'nuff said.

19:17 lol this guy thinks his friends are scum.

21:24 drunk people are sooo gross.

22:20 lol, ol' Jack of Spades is at it again.

22:48 [dog barking in distance] Yuuuup, we all know what that means.

24:56 man, these two are NOT having a good time in Dodge City.

29:09 just look him, hiding in the house like a pussy.

39:06 damn, Miss Kitty's cuter than a button in this scene.

42:58 lol this guy's life's become some kinda nightmare.

43:20 oh he's 100% over you, son.

44:19 check out that terrace, damn there are some nice buildings in Dodge now.
