Apparently clip on earrings were common in the 1800s... it was seen as profane to actually pierce the ears. I don't think a character like Miss Kitty would give a shit about that. Maybe clip ons were more comfortable back then too... I've only ever had the really really uncomfortable kind.
There were a lot of trends in the 1800s with earrings going in and out of style, with piercing being okay and then not being okay again. But apparently in the late 1800s, clip ons were especially common.
