Jim Arness never got to watch every episode of Gunsmoke.
He died in 2011 and in the years prior when he would answer questions on his newsletter, he'd say he didn't know when more seasons of the show would be released on DVD etc.
He talked about watching re-runs on TVLand but I guarantee that was a perpetual seasons 6-11 situation.
Could be wrong, maybe they showed color episodes too, I don't remember cuz I never watched it.
All I know is that the odds are low that he ever got to see every episode...
He was having a self-reflective experience watching the TVLand reruns in the last years of his life.
It must have been very interesting for him.
