"Gunsmoke" (1955) - Review & Commentary
S12 E2 - "The Gold Takers"

0:50 holy mother of God... I can't believe this show. I just can't even believe it.

It's just... extra gripping. It started out totally excellent, changed here and there, managed to keep interest throughout ELEVEN SEASONS of black and white. For real, think about that.

And now here it is, in color, like basically every single other TV show that exists... yet somehow, it's still so far beyond ANY other show in basically every way.

0:54 it's FASCINATING to me the way the horses behave in this scene. The one that starts walking up the hill gets all nervous at the dude laying on the ground and diverts its path far around him, well in advance.

2:00 are they ever gonna address the apparent cocaine usage in the old west?!

2:50 WTF is that?? It looks like cinderblock.

3:09 yeah, no shit it's not gold bro.

4:50 "Buried him in Aunt Tanzy's hat box! If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'!"

7:28 they ALL have blue eyes... except Doc's look green.

8:27 Festus makes reference to Burt Reynolds' Quint blacksmith character... they usually don't shout out former characters.

10:18 she's wearing chartreuse... one of my other favorite things about 60s/70s style. You used to see that color a lot. Wonder if they really did wear these kind of colors back in the 1800s?

14:50 I notice they've started to shorten some of the more 'lingering' face shots. Seems sorta rushed, the scenes change faster. I think it comes down to the story vs. time compromise. Since the TV show and the radio show plotlines diverged, they've had to evolve their approach to the story vs. time issue at least twice. If it's not done properly, it can dampen the dramatic effect and mess with the atmosphere of a scene.

16:12 these guys are soooo conspicuous.

17:30 lolol, Festus don't know any of them big words.

17:48 they've definitely added new features to the Festus character though. There's a new level of depth... it absolutely does make him even more likable, but it also changes the dynamic a bit. I can accept this.

18:08 he's such a great character... the PERFECT guy to have assisting the Marshal and keeping up on everything happening in town. If you didn't know Festus, I guess you'd probably think he was a bumpkin... they underestimate him and give him all the info.

19:18 wow, that did NOT look appetizing. Absolutely no spices on it at all, cuz all they had back then was maybe some salt.

19:44 "Well, you know, times change... tell ya, they're gonna change a lot more too."

21:09 these guys are fucked!

21:30 look at all these shirtless dudes! This is scandalous as fuck! This is the most shirtless dude action we've ever had on the show.

21:37 pause it and look at this... this is practically pornographic, I'm serious!!!!!!!!!

21:57 lmao embarrassiiinnnggggg.

22:58 look how dirty and sweaty these guards are... the townspeople are gonna know there's something sketch going down in there. Somebody's gonna figure it out... at least I hope they do, cuz I have no idea WTF is going on.

23:48 what the hell is with these guys??

23:53 this scene is killer with all the dirty skin and the sweat, it's so perfectly done and beautifully shot. The lighting is incredible.

24:27 good Lord, this isn't gonna end well. This show is epic... I can't believe it just got better and better.

25:00 the fake brick 'jello' wall is just too much for me though... it's almost like an inside joke or something.

26:50 they basically had to mimic perpetual 'late afternoon' kind of natural lighting inside a studio.

30:10 it's Thad's fine ass.

31:29 oh he smelled that BS instantly. I'm telling you, these outlaw guys have gotta be on drugs.

35:42 "We gotta get it outta Dodge."

36:12 gee, they sure are excited about repairing that gun, huh?

36:58 I'm honestly cracking up right now. These guys are a MESS.

38:00 I mean, they ARE pretty persuasive, NGL. I'm kinda torn on this one.

38:32 man I dunno what the hell that is, but it's NOT gold. Is somebody ever gonna mention that??

39:00 this is crazy. Poor Matt, having to go along with this.

39:50 dude this is hardcore, I don't think Dodge has ever been in this kinda situation before.

39:58 this guy is such a dork, why does he always have that goofy/creepy smile?!

40:55 honestly I feel like blacksmith dude really could kill 'em all.

42:48 holy shit, this is amazing.

44:30 this is sooo fucking eerie... https://imgur.com/a/Bvuihyd I can't even explain how hard this episode goes. It's pure sensual delight.

45:07 it's the Dodge Army.

45:50 this is a real outdoors set... 'Central Dodge' is an indoor studio.

46:50 loudest fkn gun ever on the show, they really took it to the next level with that one.

47:10 one of the most memorable gangs of outlaw assholes who have been through Dodge yet.

47:36 shoutout to that weird muted green color, love it.

These first few episodes of season 12 have been ridiculously good.
