What I notice most about the early color episodes is that the indoor 'Central Dodge' set gives the show hardcore 'play' vibes...
Like when the people on horses and buggies and on foot come around the corner at the end of the set where the fake backdrop starts...
It's like a huge play, but it's so fucking well done. It doesn't hamper the feel of the show, but it adds an extra layer of understanding about how EXCELLENT all the main actors really are. How familiar they are with their characters, how much history they have with those characters, how much they've been integrated into their own individual being.
The only way it could get more legit is to have a WHOLLY outdoor set where the actors 100% forget this isn't real life and they get totally immersed in the roleplay.
According to the info I can find, they ALWAYS filmed a lot outdoors in SoCal, Arizona/Utah border area, Kanab etc. But the way I understood it was that LATE in the series, they started filming in Kanab all the time. Like there was an entire replica built outdoors there and that's where they filmed in the final years of the show.
It's surprisingly hard to track down info about EXACTLY WHERE they were filming, and when.
I think it's somewhat better to have an indoor studio, because whenever they switch it up and film in real outdoor settings, the sun is HARDCORE. You can tell it's mega bright and hot. It's a different situation than filming indoors with bright lights. Both settings would be really bright and hot, but I imagine dealing with all the outdoor elements would be harder on the actors.
