Essentially, his approach was to write the lines for all the characters and say what he wanted to say through them. Bob's writings have an unmistakable lyricism and tone that can't really be hidden. His character in the movie hardly said anything, and he made sure his own lines were careful so that it wouldn't seem like he was trying to push his views in an overbearing way. It was clear that the other characters' lines were written by him, especially when delivered by Lange... her performance was sheer excellence, as per usual.
