Sage does tend to get kind of defensive with people in the comments though...
It's better not to reply at all than to say something back which makes you look defensive.
A lot of these longstanding channels on YouTube are going through a dry spell, numbers dropping, views in the shitcan...
Some of them think they're shadowbanned, but a lot of them are just in need of a change-up and still others are just seeing the consequences of getting too up in their feelings toward their own communities, either in the comments or by statements in the video.
I think shadowbanning is like 45% of the problem. So yeah, it's a problem, but it's not the main reason for diminishing returns in most cases.
