The reason interterrestrials survive so long and keep advancing their tech to levels that seem "alien" is because they're sub-surface creatures.
They're not subject to the various forms of deadly fallout that occur when surface dwellers reverse engineer their scraps and combine them with dangerous half-assed tech with which they ultimately wipe themselves out.
