It's certainly possible to do.
But you'd definitely have to be a psycho.
There are certain things that make me think the lying angle isn't really plausible though...
For example, he claimed there were levels of the ship he never got to go into.
If you're gonna make up a story, are you going to limit yourself within it?
Maybe there are principles of story fabrication that I'm not familiar with.
