I really think calisthenics and animal flow type exercises are the most useful types of fitness that you can possibly practice.
Lifting weights and running on a treadmill, all the usual gym crap, well it's better than nothing (obviously) but body weight exercises and exercising on outdoor terrain is FAR more useful than stationary gym-style exercises.
These types of natural exercises PREPARE you for all types of situations where you might need bodyweight strength to maneuver safely. Practicing falling in order to minimize damage and all of those preventative type fitness practices are where it's at.
