Man, lastnight I watched the original Top Gun AND Top Gun: Maverick.
I had never seen Top Gun, but I figured I had to watch it before I watched the sequel.
After it was over, I was pretty skeptical that the sequel could ever be as good as the original even though I've heard that Maverick was EVEN BETTER than the original movie.
So I started watching Maverick and dude, within like the first 15 minutes, I was BAWLING. Like SOBBING.
It was insane dude.
I'm tearing up right now just thinking about some of those scenes and how powerful they were.
So glad I did watch the original movie first because it really set the scene for Maverick's emotional state and the things he's been struggling with for (now) decades.
That backstory made the opening of Maverick even more impactful, but even if you'd never seen the first movie, I feel like you'd still be moved by it.
It was absolutely excellent, and I truly believe Top Gun: Maverick is one of the greatest movies of all time.
