See, this is exactly why it's not fair to compare these old school figure skaters to modern ones. They had only recently figured out that they gotta screw that shit onto the boots. Those were the caveman days of figure skating. Anybody who was great back then was just working with what they had available at the time.
And I guess the same can be said for the current era. But I don't think there's anywhere else to really go from here, just because of the limits of the human body. When you're reaching these limits, what else is there to do?? What does innovation even look like from here?? That's why I think they need to simplify things again.
