Dexter: Review & Commentary

Back around 2014, I was super into 'chillwave' and all the other dreamy electropop that was coming out at the time.

Ah man that was some good shit.

Only problem was, most of the time the songs were WAAAAAY too fucking fast.

I often had to edit them to my liking, which is exactly what I did with this one song...

[Dark Passenger - Teeel]

And hey, you know what, let me not hate. It's good. It's boppy. It's almost even a little disco-y. You guys know how much I love disco.

But my edit was better...

I like my electronic music kinda slow and bassy, y'know, I like a little bit of heavy ambience. I uploaded that vid to my original music video channel but I dunno the exact date cuz I deleted 'em all.

Anyway, the words "Dark Passenger" really had no meaning to me at the time. Sure, that rando guy had registered on my site using the name, and by that point, I'm sure I'd seen the words around various places because of the popularity of Dexter.

But I'd never looked into it, didn't know WTF it meant, didn't try to figure it out.

Fast forward to 2018...

"The Dark Passenger"

I posted the video when I was on a cryptic bender cuz I was feeling some type of way, and then I went into a rant about what "the dark passenger" REALLY IS...

I've never seen this show (not even once) and really don't know anything about it.

This definition of the 'dark passenger' is flawed in a 'made for TV' kind of way...

In other words, it's a 'dumbed down' definition.

Using the analogy from that link, the driver is not controlled by the passenger... the driver is in control of the vehicle. The passenger is at the mercy of that truth. The passenger is an observer, just riding along... conversations take place between the driver and the passenger, etc.

The 'dark passenger' isn't always evil... in my opinion, an evil dark passenger is only as common as truly evil people are. Having said that, in my experience, it is dark. And 'dark' doesn't mean evil. We're all dualistic beings, light and dark... that doesn't make us evil. Although some are totally evil, LOL.

The dark passenger is often a voice of wisdom, typically a specialized type of wisdom, knowledge/experience in a particular field. The dark passenger typically 'rides along' with an embodied being, as part of the passenger's karma. This is why the dark passenger is 'dark'. They are assigned to experience things through a vessel (passenger seat) for the purpose of 'community service', on the Universal level.

So now that I've ACTUALLY SEEN the show...

I can honestly say my original take on the meaning of the term was totally correct.

What we see on the show is indeed a dumbed down version of the concept.

However it's important to remember that the show is based on the book "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" (2004) by Jeff Lindsay.

His book apparently took off so fuckin' hard that they made a damn TV show out of it, props to that guy.

His 'Dexter' series consists of 8 books. The TV show only followed the first book somewhat, then kinda branched out into its own thing, which is probably for the best.

Book 3 of the series is called "Dexter in the Dark" and the opening chapter gives the origin story of the Dark Passenger. The TRUE, real origin story.

It's the most hated on book in the series, which is just an absolute shocker. I guess an ultra simplified explanation for the origin of evil itself is like WAAAY too out there for most people. They just can't grasp it.

You can read the opening chapter in the Amazon sample or listen to the audiobook version sample...
