I will say, the books are exceedingly violent. I actually dislike how graphic they can get, and I'm glad the TV show mostly put a lid on that aspect of things. Book Dexter is a savage motherfucker. But it's not the depictions of his violent acts that really bother me that much, it's really that Jeff (and his wife who apparently helped him write these books) went balls to the wall in describing how horrible the other killers are, so it makes Dexter seem like a breath of fresh air in comparison.
BTW, when I was first looking into the books, I rolled my eyes when I found out that Jeff Lindsay's wife is Hilary Hemingway. Yeah. THAT namesake. Exactly that one. I was like, "Oh well no fucking wonder his book got all this attention and was made into a TV show, he's married to a fucking Hemingway."
And I'm not saying there isn't something to that, BUT...
There was a (text) interview with Jeff Lindsay wherein he basically said he was ignored and not taken seriously in the early days, partly BECAUSE of who his wife is.
He either talks a great line of shit, or he's being real. I choose to think that being married to a descendant of Hemingway wasn't as much of a boon to his writing as I had initially assumed. He claims it was very hard to get any eyes on his book, and nobody really wanted to publish it. I'm glad I read into the history instead of just slamming the gavel and assuming everything was handed to him because of his wife.
