Two ways it could play out...
The real deal splits apart DURING the process of erosion...
Or AFTER the process has reached critical mass and 'caves'.
The latter would probably be better in the long run as it will mitigate confusion.
If it splits apart DURING the process... that basically gives legs to the 'controlled opposition' who are coming on scene. They still won't be successful in eventuality, but it will provide enough attention diversion and confuse enough people to buy some time.
If it happens AFTER the erosion process, that means the caving in will be pretty fast and hard, which is likely what 'they' want and are trying to achieve. The remaining of the real deal will then begin regaining strength and credibility... involved in that will be a lot of super personal and sad kind of 'relationship breakup' crap that gossip lovers will enjoy feeding on.
