I expect iPhone 9 to fix all the issues iPhone 8 will inevitably have, and I expect the back to be metal.

The old iPhones had glass backs.  I liked them better because they wouldn't flex as easily and crack a solder joint as the aluminum backed recent generations are prone to do.
