scheduling movies at 3 hours length or more is a huge pain in the ass. you basically get 4 shows a day like that on 1 screen.
for a 6 hour movie, you're only gonna get 2 show times, neither of which are ideal. basically a 12pm and 630pm.
with such length, most people would need at least 2 different bathroom breaks, as well as basically dedicating their entire night [or half day] to this endeavor. the box office receipts for this will not cover the basic fees as people will not show up for this. i've run quite a few marathons, in which we'd play part 1 [and or 2] before 2 [or 3] and none of the earlier parts have ever done well.
what you're getting on to is the difference between an episodic series, in which true character and story development may occur, and the one-off insulated style hollywood movies. if you really want story, hollywood is not the place to look. i'd argue even multi-season series aren't the place to look. you want books. *gasp*
