I have a pretty elaborate telemarketer avoidance system. It's based on the fact that the only people who know my land line number, my mobile number, and my e-mail address (all three) are people who have legitimate business with me. These are all set up so that a spammer can't easily connect the dots and figure out they belong to the same person.
I always let the answering machine pick up my land line. It's nearly always one of two autodialers calling from local numbers. They hang up without leaving a message. People calling on legitimate business usually leave a message. If I receive an e-mail or a call on my mobile phone immediately after the land line rings, it's a safe bet the call is legit.
