I wonder what the functional crank does. In the old days, it turned a magneto to generate alternating current for the ringer. Those magnetos were pretty heavy, and it probably wouldn't be cost effective to produce them for that purpose today. When I was a kid, we had shocking fun times playing with those old generators.
