It occurs to me that it's likely that Elliot at some point confided his lack of self-esteem to someone, probably his mother, who then told him that he was "magnificent"... and that's where he got it.

Cuz think about it, if you were a parent to a child who totally wasn't ugly, and they came to you saying they think they're ugly, or they have no confidence for dating or whatever, you would probably try to fluff up their ego as much as you could. A mother would especially do this.
