In this article it says that McQuiston was unable to have children because of some mystery illness, so they got a 'surrogate' to carry her egg.

They inseminated someone who was in the bloodline with his sperm so that he wouldn't be 'ruining' the bloodline by reproducing with McQuiston.
It was probably all a conspiracy. She probably doesn't even know that it wasn't even her own egg or biologically her child.
