I've always felt like they're just us. It was a theory I heard long ago and it always seemed right to me... especially since I believe that interstellar travel is impossible. And I mean the truth of the matter is, if they were traveling via stars as portals, they'd be way above the need for bulky spacesuits. As far as interplanetary travel... meh. Maybe.
I'm not necessarily suggesting time travel as an explanation.
It's also a possibility that these are beings from the inner earth... interterrestrials. "Aliens" inside our own planet... also one of my long held theories.
