If you have to merge with AI or depend on a machine of any kind?? You're not immortal.
True immortality can only be natural.
Is anything naturally immortal in the universe?
Only consciousness.
Attempting to live forever as one consciousness shard in one vessel is the opposite of immortality.
Consciousness lives eternally by flowing through the matrix...
Therefore you're cockblocking yourself from eternal life by attempting fake immortality.

It experiences every single lifeform (consciousness vector) via this natural process of 'flowing through' the matrix, animating it with awareness.
Is it part of the grand scheme of things for some scared, pathetic species/lifeform on some planet out there to try and be immortal through the use of machinery? Maybe.
Perhaps it is.
But it seems like a sad ride to me...

I've always assumed they're afraid to die, or that they don't want to fuck around with dying because it messes with their plans of (evil) advancement...
If they live normal lifespans and die when they're old, it interrupts and delays their dirty plans and they have to spend time waiting to grow up again before they can continue their evil agendas.
By kicking the death can down the road, they're essentially pulling an "all-nighter", only it's an entire lifetime being spent in a mad rush toward accomplishing this warped "progress" they're obsessed with.
