I'm still amazed by OG telephones. Coast-to-coast voice communication in the age of horse and buggy, 20 years before the first electronic device was invented.

The signaling system alone is an amazing achievement for the 19th century. Rapidly disconnecting and reconnecting the circuit to send the digits in the phone number. Sending 20Hz 90V AC electrical current to ring the bell. Using spinning electrical generators to send the call progress tones (dial tone, busy signal, ringing, etc.)

A few years ago, my roommate at the time threw mine away, thinking it was a useless piece of scrap metal.

I mean it's kind of obvious it was designed as a cutting tool of some sort. Not just a random piece of metal.
