"Gunsmoke" (1955) - Review & Commentary
I cannot freaking imagine how long that shit would take!

Holy crap.

I'm so glad I have the box set...

https://www.amazon.com/Gunsmoke-The-Comp...B085DT6Z6G

It's worth the price tag, trust me...

I'd have sold my ass to get it if I had to!?

No complaining, folks...

When it first came out, it was $400.

Today's price is a steal ;)

I just can't decide at the moment whether this is a crushing disappointment that will take many years of treatment with Dr. Trump's Butthurt Salve to overcome. Sad Nana

BTW please do not link to your source in the future...

I believe in buying stuff...

Especially in this case.

Always best to keep things on the up and up.

One thing I truly believe is that there is real magic in Gunsmoke...

It comes to people when they need it. When it's time. The hand of destiny is at play in this show, in a very natural and unintentional way that I've never seen in any other type of entertainment media.

So it's best for people to either see the re-runs as is provided on networks, to utilize the few streaming platforms which host the show in part, to acquire the DVD box set, etc.

Everyone's lead up to this life changing Gunsmoke introduction will be different, as everyone's path of destiny is an individual matter.

Love you so much, Dev. You really are so special.

BTW...

I've had "Crimson and Clover" playing on repeat since I made that post earlier while I work around the house and drop in here every now and then and if I hear it one more time I legitimately think I'm going to hurl.

Time to turn it off and start my nightly Gunsmoke binge.

I would have to drop heavy hints, do a lot of sucking up, and hope someone was feeling especially generous - and I mean uncharacteristically magnanimous - in order to acquire the box set. It would definitely be money well spent, but those of us who think so are probably a very small minority. The Boomers grew up watching it, and they're still glued to the TV should they care to catch the reruns, so they're not seeing it as something they'd spend money on.

I debated posting the link. I figured it would get removed or edited if it didn't fit the community standards. My apologies, MO.

I do miss the shady side of the interwebz though.

Whilst sprawled out flat on my stomach recovering from surgery these last couple of weeks, I've fiddled around with a few new and old school things, such as DOSBox (an open source MS-DOS PC emulator), QB64 (an open source clone of Microsoft QuickBASIC), and this thing called zettelkasten, which merits a thread of its own.

Oh, and piracy. In my defense, t must say it didn't come immediately to mind.

How is that well not theirs anyway? It's right there in front of their house.

Who digs a well in their neighbor's front yard?!?

I hope you're feeling so much better and that you never have to go through anything like that ever again sweetheart. I've been keeping you in my prayers and thoughts for a great recovery and improved lifelong health.

MO: Thanks for the Amazon link.
Also, I saw your doppelganger today ... somewhere on the west coast (keeping it vague just in case it was you, lol).
It was like MO circa travel vlog days with short hair.

Dev: hoping all is good and getting better, man.

S2 E38 - "Liar From Blackhawk"

0:27 I love the episodes that start out with Dodge at nighttime. It looks so serene. Imagine how it would have been back in those days... the only light at night would be the moon and stars, and the lanterns or candles in people's houses.

0:30 I love how respectful they are to all the women on this show... back when even the prostitutes were ladylike. Sigh.

0:56 "Well I left there with twenty dollars. That's as rich as I've ever been!"

I haven't seen a bad guest star on the show yet. They've all been top tier quality, none of them have ever lacked, or hinted at a sense of modernity.

2:05 is Chester really gonna take the good marshal's last silver dollar and go piss it away in the Long Branch?? =\

2:35 I can feel Miss Kitty's loins aching with desire at the mere mention of "Mr. Dillon"... *nanarub*

2:57 I'm starting to get the idea that Chester's trying to push his luck with Miss Kitty tonight. So first he's taking Matt's last silver dollar to blow on drinks, and then he's gonna try to get cheeky with his girl too?? He's treating Kitty like she's a saloon girl or something!?! Ain't really met Festus yet, but I bet he'd never do some shit like that. Too bad we gotta wait til season 8!!! Festus = bestest.

3:40 TBH the thing is... Kitty going around dressed up to the nines every night in the saloon, it ain't like she can be all surprised when dudes come onto her. Like this guy is some rando and yeah he's being pushy but, she's a freaking saloon girl. If she's supposed to be different from the rest then how is she gonna differentiate herself??

4:25 what in the honest fuck has gotten into Chester tonight?? This is just... embarrassing, to put it lightly. Are they gonna explain this kinda behavior?

5:16 never mind... this Hank dude is even more embarrassing. Chester's cringe thunder just got stolen.

5:30 "What's got into you anyway?" THAT'S WHAT I WAS WONDERING. (It's so weird how they start saying the same things I've said pretty much verbatim.)

6:08 lmao look at Matt eyeballing Chester up and down... that's the "Am I gonna have to start worrying about you around my woman?" look. Bahahaha!!! Chester needs to marry up already... this is just getting weird.

6:30 uh yeah, that entire story sounds totally made up.

6:43 *thinks back to that episode where Matt shot down a group of outlaws by himself* ... Sooo, why are we supposed to be impressed with this nitwit whether his story is true or not??

It'd be easy to lie about stuff like this and get a story going about yourself in those days though. No way to really verify your claims. It's kinda brilliant TBH but at some point you'd DEFINITELY have to prove yourself, so in the end it would backfire. Pun intended.

7:00 lol Shinn looks scared... "He's not really gonna call me on my BS is he?!?!"

8:44 "Chester, sleepin' is for women. It'll just make you fat." BAHAHAHAHAHAHOOOOLY SHIT!!!!!!! Marshal Dillon is DAMN RIGHT though. God. He knows everything. Like... he's the PERFECT man. Who the heck wrote this character and those lines?? Like, who INVENTED THIS?!!?!!!

Apparently it was this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Meston But without Arness to bring him to life, I don't think the mere writing/lines would be the same at all. It's a brilliant character. He's the kinda guy every woman wants, and the kinda guy every man wants to be.

9:37 I think this Davey dude is in on the lies about this Shinn fella. It's like he's the hype man or something, lmao!!!

12:24 he definitely didn't look like he wanted to do that. He also looks like he's never shot a man before.

15:11 the lighting is gorgeous in this scene.

19:46 I feel sorry for this Shinn guy, it's obvious he isn't up to anything and he really doesn't want any trouble.

20:30 well I guess we're gonna have us a good old fashioned hangin'... *facepalm*

21:25 told ya.

23:13 I love his profile... he's gorgeous from every angle.

24:36 I love his gaze from under the shadow of that hat brim... *heart eyes*

S2 E39 - "Jealousy"

Uh oh, I wonder who this title is referencing!?! Are we finally gonna get some jealous Matt or Kitty action?!?

0:55 that Boot Hill intro's making it sound way more serious than some romance stuff, I'm thinking it's not about Kitty.

1:27 looks like they've really expanded the card game quality at the Long Branch since Kitty took over. Makes sense considering her character was based on Lottie Deno, a wild west gambling hall owner... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lottie_Deno

I wish I owned a saloon with a gambling hall... *dreamy sigh* I'd dress up real pretty and play blackjack all the time.

1:54 "I got a feeling it won't take long." LMAOOOOO!!!!!!

2:37 bro that was SAVAAAAAAGGGGGE. First time I've seen something like that on this show.

3:32 this guy is great, he totally aced this role. (Pun?!)

4:17 oh my God man. Chester is having one of those phases where he's damn near unlikable again.

5:56 oh so THIS is the jealous guy.

6:03 why does this sound familiar and give me deja vu when I know good and well I've never seen this episode before??

8:36 "Hello maaah-shul..." OH HELL NAW. I didn't like her tone at all. Is she about to be some kinda troublemaker?! But she looked so innocent?!

9:40 I WANNA talk some perv smack about Marshal Dillon and make pervy jokes, but something just stops me.

13:44 I don't think I've ever heard a sexier order of coffee in my life! His voice is absolutely delicious... rich and smooth.

19:10 Dodge City definitely ain't no place for this lady though.

19:30 *gasp* HOLY SHIT. I definitely didn't expect that, lmao!!!

That does it for season 2!

S3 E1 - "Crack-Up"

0:40 wow check out that righteous candle. This is an intense scene... I'm intrigued.

1:32 famous last words, lmao!

2:05 where the hell is Tascosa anyway?? They keep bringing it up. Ohhh wowww...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tascosa,_Texas

Quote:Tascosa, sometimes called Old Tascosa, is the former capital of 10 counties in the Texas Panhandle. The town emerged briefly in the 1880s as an economic rival of Dodge City, Kansas. Located in Oldham County northwest of Amarillo, Tascosa is now a ghost town.

Makes you think about all the other "ghost towns" there must be... places throughout the course of history that were active hubs at one time but are long deserted now.

4:55 wow, well this guy ain't gonna be making any fuckin' friends, lmao! Who the hell gets that up in arms about a haircut??

11:32 you can make it real rough on me ANYTIME baby!!!!!!

12:55 pft, I'm siding with the gunman on this one. LMAOOOOOOO!!!!! (Spank me.)

14:50 Kitty's kinda bossy sometimes.

17:01 damn look at those righteous earrings.

18:15 I wonder if there's any saloon music on YouTube.

Hmmm, there's this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgaOFVuf1q0

That's really cool.

These are good playlists...

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...sII6684-CD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnkBVCbNicg&list=PL355D12B3DE62909C

This appears to be the absolute ultimate in authenticity, though...

"The Best of Scott Joplin: New Orleans Rags"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1yqBt-PkT4

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Joplin

According to his Wiki, he wrote over 100 original ragtime pieces... they've been played by several pianists.

These two are the best:
https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B000QQWCZO
https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B00DCINTO6

19:45 that bottle looks so legit. That's another thing about this show... everything looks so authentic. There's absolutely nothing that doesn't look straight out of the 1800s. None of the language, none of the music... nothing gives it away.

22:37 they do an excellent job making Matt seem lightning fast, his gunfights are over before you can even blink.

24:50 this was the best death scene on the show yet... very well done.

S3 E2 - "Gun for Chester"

0:30 this is new Boot Hill opening sequence footage. It's delightful to see the occasional Boot Hill intro carry on into season 3. It's still one of my favorite things about the show.

0:42 you can see in his face that he's truly formed a oneness with his character at this point. The experience is palpable.

That original Boot Hill intro footage was from before he ever even really played the character for any considerable amount of time... but this is season 3.

Now he has become Marshal Dillon... https://imgur.com/a/WD7pCR2

1:56 fifty cents a day?? That's pretty steep.

13:35 this Asa Ledbetter guy is pretty hot. He's damn near as big as Marshal Dillon! Righteous name too.

22:15 the lighting in some of these scenes is just incredible... https://imgur.com/a/DKpPmyn

23:25 it's moments like this when Chester 100% redeems himself.

24:38 look at Arness's body language after that emotional exchange...

He felt that moment and it moved throughout his body. It's more than acting. It's a natural flow state.

S3 E4 - "Kitty's Outlaw"

I'm watching this episode while I have dinner.

3:17 roflmfaololol.

3:45 I love that we can see Matt's face in the mirror during this scene.

5:40 uh oh... how is Matt gonna feel about this guy touching all over his woman? Miss Kitty sure looks happy to see this guy.

7:45 well without the info that Matt and Miss Kitty are a thing, all of that just sounded sorta random and vaguely threatening, lmao.

8:00 wow, look at Kitty just flaunting that butt ruffle.

8:40 "Well he's practically stopped watering the whiskey!" lmfaolol.

9:56 wow, so Kitty's gonna share a passionate kiss with this doof, but she never even once sucks face with Matt throughout the whole series??

I don't give a shit who that guy is or what their history is, there's no way I'd be getting it on with anyone besides Marshal Dillon.

10:50 what're they trying to make him feel better or something?

13:17 intense though.

13:40 by "having supper" he means he's gonna show her who owns that ass!!!

14:55 seems to be implied that Kitty set this up by dragging him all the way to the edge of town!!!

He may never lay the dick on her again after this =\

19:56 well that takes care of him!!!

21:20 "Hello, Kitty, you ignorant slut!"

24:24 damn Kitty, TMI though like... fine, okay.
