There are a lot of bootleg video and audio recordings of his most recent concerts on YouTube and he's still just... agh, my God, fucking incredible. He mostly sits at the piano now. I don't think there's much guitar in his music anymore because it probably hurts his hands to play. His voice is still doing well and has a lot of character... he knows how to work it.
But listen to any 90 year old talk... their voices get really weak and start to fade. I can't imagine somebody being able to sing anymore at that age, but I haven't really looked into it. I mean, let's face it, most people don't live that long in the first place. And if they do, they may be senile or have any other number of issues.
It's sad. If I had my way, I'd let Bob live out his natural life, then reset him back to age 30 over and over again...

Then I'd eagerly await 45 year old Bob...

But that's just me.

The older you already are, the truer it is.
Yeah my dad retired at 55 he's now almost 85 and I think he has been dying... but very slowly. I believe it may have started when he married my mom in 1968. Was just on the phone with him and asked if he ever liked Dylan. He said no, he could never make out what he was saying, but he liked Elvis because you could understand the words.
Anyway... I always had a Dylan bias because I associated him with my friend's annoying ex-hippy parents in the 80s when I was into Ozzy and AC/DC... I mean Like a Rolling Stone and Tambourine Man are undeniably great as are others, but that voice and... accent? inflection?
So I never knew much about him, and had him kind of written off as "Robert Zimmerman, the guy who sold his soul to the devil" Never knew about his Christian thing or even heard an interview until I saw this thread. Which is slightly embarrassing being 49ish and someone who used to kind of keep up with pop culture and such. I think "Gen X" may have somewhat missed out on him due to his "Boomer" associations. Definitely a poet and a fascinating character though. YT for all its faults is a treasure trove for this kind of thing. Thanks for the awesome compilation, love hearing your take... you may have converted me to being a fan, as if he needs more lol

Weird problems with the site... I dunno if the host is shitting out or if it's just me.
They started some type of maintenance 15 min. ago which is exactly when the issue seemed to start.
But I can assure you that if the site goes down, I'll get it back up and running within several weeks.
It'll be like greased lightning...
Did you check the alternator?

Few days later...
"So, guys. Sometimes I get emotional. Anyway, it was the alternator."
Freaking epic.
But I'm happy for her it was nothing serious, I relate a lot to that chick.
Hahaha yeah that was HIlarious... Good it got fixed, I do hope things gets better she's been frantic lately

I think they should be discoverable and available for purchase on Amazon and his official website.
This pre-release listing literally just showed up on Amazon...

"Slow Train Coming" is definitely in his top 5 best albums.

I love how so many live performances, interviews, and pretty much every single song has been uploaded to YouTube over the years.
There is so much more information out there now than when I first discovered Bob. YouTube existed at the time, but it was pretty new...
It's taken all these years for people to get their jacked, bootlegged archives uploaded, lol, but man am I grateful.

Dude...
"The Philosophy of Modern Song" (2022) is one of the most linguistically SCATHING things I have EVER read. ANYWHERE. It's almost as scathing as some of the reviews, lmao.
Holy fucking crap, this book...
It's like...
One of the sexiest things I've ever read, but it's also revoltingly graphic and shocking in some parts.
Legitimately, I've yelled out "WHAT THE FUUHUUHUUCK!??!?!?!!?!" at least 5 times so far while reading it.
Honestly...
When did Bob REALLY write this?? Is this FOR REAL Bob in his 8th decade of life??? How?! HOW!??!?
I mean it's like...
A nuclear fucking blast.
And then...
My other question would be...
Um, when will there be more, Bob??!?!?!?!?

Some people are saying it's so obvious that this book was ghostwritten, and I couldn't disagree more. Anyone who's listened to Theme Time Radio Hour would know that this book is basically just the written form of some of the things he'd say on those episodes. I can totally hear Bob saying this stuff.
What I do find slightly odd is some of the missing commas and other punctuation in the book. Some of the punctuation and sentence structure isn't proper... which I find absolutely no fault with. I am only raising the point because I wonder if anyone even edited/read through this book after he wrote it. I'm sure that info is probably listed in the book, lmao, I guess I should look. Okay, so I looked and I don't really see any editing credits... there are a few people named in the foreword, but it isn't attributing any of the actual writing/editing to them, so I really dunno.
But I'll be reading some of this stuff and just think to myself, man it seems like Bob banged this out and published it himself with nobody else verifying one single element of it, because if they had, they probably would have said something about a few of the things he said...

I guess some of the things I've said in this thread make me sound kind of ageist...
I'm not trying to be dismissive of elderly people like they aren't capable of stuff or they're like inherently handicapped and screwed up or something.
Dunno, it's just...
Bob Dylan probably isn't a good example of your typical old person because he's fricken Bob Dylan.

Parallels have been drawn between Bob's book and Quentin Tarantino's "Cinema Speculation" (2022).
Bob's book is basically just him commentating on several songs. Tarantino's book is commentary on several movies. Is any of this sounding familiar, cuz this is essentially what I've been doing on this site for years... but I digress.
I don't think there's any actual link between these books, at least not from a 'ghostwriting' or editing standpoint. There don't seem to be any connections from a content standpoint.
I don't have Tarantino's book, but I'm looking at the Amazon preview and I can see that the 'voice' of the writer and the punctuation etc. are completely different from Bob's book. Tarantino's looks tediously canon when it comes to punctuation and sentence structure. Not my style, personally. I have chosen to innovate when it comes to writing and not stick to the same old tired literary rules that I was subject to in past lives... like, bitch please, I'm not just jerking off riding The Wheel here, I believe in existential efficiency.

If your writing has a tonne of long dashes and commas out the wazoo, I'ma lose interest.
That's just how it is. It's a tired approach.
I am not much of a reader when it comes to actual books, but when the topic really interests me, I can stick with it at least halfway through.
I find Bob's writing very captivating and it's almost something you wanna draw out as long as you can, just sort of savoring the experience... because it IS like having an actual experience, rather than just a "spectator" point of view.
His "Chronicles Vol. 1" book was that way, but I was surprised to find "Philosophy of Modern Song" felt the same way.

The biggest gripe I see repeatedly mentioned is that the title was not appropriate for the actual content of the book. Apparently, people wanted to FINALLY get some insight from one of the most prolific songwriters of all time on the PHILOSOPHY of songwriting.
Somehow, they find this book lacking in PHILOSOPHY...
To me, the book is almost solid, 100% philosophy.
What is philosophy??
Well, historically, correct me if I'm wrong, it seems to be a bunch of dudes and a few chicks pontificating on WTF they think the meaning of everything is.
So I fail to see any lack of "philosophy" in this book.
I guess people wanted Bob to really spell it out syllable by syllable and explain once and for all the mathematics of how he writes.
Well, that's never gonna happen. It's not possible anyway. It's like expecting somebody to explain existence itself, the origin of life, the step by step processes that have lead to what we see today in cold, hard scientific terms that an insomniac could fall asleep to...
It's expecting way too much, and I dunno why anybody would want that out of Bob in the first place.

Besides, it's common for publishers to change the title of a book regardless of what the author wants.
