This is the best version of "Don't Let Me Down"... which until recently, it didn't even really click with me that it's a Beatles song. I mean it just seems like one you don't hear a lot. I never had the Hey Jude album. The album version isn't as good as this one IMHO.

The description says it was filmed on the roof of the Apple studio... says this specific recording is on the "Let It Be - Naked" album.

Fuck, I've had "Obla di, Obla da" in my head all day long, and was getting ready to search "Beatles" but here's this thread front and center.
Totally agree that the rooftop version is THE version of this song. So good.
Gotta go look through the thread to see what's been discussed!

I really do wonder what strange voodoo they used to keep songs like this coming into people's minds for decades??
I mean if you just read about it...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Lane
It's supposedly just a nice song about a street they used to know.
But what is it REALLY?

Gotta be the timing/pacing of certain instruments in the song or something.

This is what Michael Jackson said about the Beatles catalog after he bought them.
“You can’t put a price on a Picasso… you can’t put a price on these songs, there’s no value on them,” Jackson allegedly said. “They’re the best songs that have ever been written.”
They had a magic combination of talent, creativity, charisma, charm, intelligence and work ethic. It's something that will never happen again.

I think they are TIMELESS.
Like of course you can hear the influence of the 60s all over their music but...
There is NO ONE who sounds like The Beatles.
People try to sound like them, or they sort of echo that same kind of vibe...
But the special touch, that musician's fingerprint that they ALL have, is so unique to each member...
All of them put together are an entirely unique phenomenon, and that transcends time and space.

"Now and Then"
When I first heard about this "new" song, I was skeptical. The articles I read said that each surviving member of the band worked to perfect the recording the best they could and that it had been in the works for many years. They used some AI tools to help it along as well, and of course I had to roll my eyes at that. But, we're talking about the friggen Beatles here... we know they're talented. There's nothing wrong with using AI this way, especially in a music industry that has been dominated by autotune for the past few decades. Shit like this is where AI actually shines.
But I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it.
The song dropped yesterday and I listened to it. I thought they did a good job with it. It's not really the type to get stuck in your head or stick out that much within the Beatles catalog. But I thought it was good.
The video though?
Oh my God man.
When I first saw it pop up, I debated even watching it because I figured they'd do something cringey with restored footage of John. It had to be done delicately. And I must say, it was perfect.
They showed footage of young Paul and Ringo beside themselves in present day footage. That was a brilliant approach. It showed the fun and goofy sides of the members, and reminded us of their whole essence... not just the seriousness of the fame and legend, but their personality underneath.
The ending of the video was intense. I can appreciate it because I have a penchant for making music videos incorporating superimposition, and showing timelapses in reverse.
Fading each member's childhood photo into the screaming crowd, then each member fading out and the Beatles sign going dark... it was a beautiful goodbye.

Pretty interesting. No denying they did their level best.
They took John's solo demo and changed it by following a lot of the methods they probably always used, along with some modern consultation of course.
Not sure how much George was ever involved with this song or if he was involved at all, so obviously that does leave a gap in the Beatles recipe.
Maybe this video will shed some light...
0:41 so if they got the demo in 1994, George probably was directly involved.
1:12 I will say this though...
If they're acting like there aren't like 100 other random songs that John and George have stored away between them, just waiting to be discovered, they're blowing smoke up some mad ass. That's okay though, I like a good story. I can respect it.
1:35 they're calling this "The Last Beatles Song" and as far as anything created while any of them are still alive, then yes, it most likely is. But in 10 or 20 years when AI is far more advanced, anyone will be able to feed a previously unheard demo into it and create a "new" Beatles song. It'll have far less soul and meaning simply because they'll all be dead... but it will most certainly be done.
In general, AI will be used to massively fixate on the past... I think there's some danger in that. But I also think it's human nature to do so.
2:20 I'm glad George was directly involved in this. I figured he was since they used the footage of him in the studio for this music video. So collaborative work on the song dates back to 1995.
2:48 he's right... John absolutely would have wanted this.
4:50 props to John for wearing yellow tinted glasses though, bro was ahead of his time. They really make everything look better.
5:04 heck, even this video is excellently done. Lots of care and effort put into it. I am really impressed with how much everyone gave to this project.
6:57 isolated vocals. See, this is a legitimately respectable use of AI. If they'd just use it for GOOD instead of trawling around on the internet stealing pond scum to feed it and craft its mock consciousness from, it wouldn't be such a divisive topic. This mini documentary also highlights how quickly the technology is evolving and how easy it makes things which were once painstaking or just plain impossible.
7:33 "It's far out." Lmao, I love Ringo. That's my favorite Beatle right there.
10:40 amen dude, so true.

Yup...

They won't rest until they've enhanced/restored all audio, every film, and every damn photo of any historical interest whatsoever.
It's a huge endeavor that spends so much time obsessing on the past. It's going to happen though, if humanity doesn't nuke itself into oblivion of course.

It will lead to massive obsession with the past in ways that we've never seen before in history.
And even though it involves technology which just becomes more and more advanced over time...
I think it's only nature at play. This is how cycles perpetuate and nothing ever truly ends.
