Emerald Tablet - Wikipedia
The opening of the tablet is quoted in The Second Book of the Element of the Foundation
(ca. 850-950)
(translation)
Truth! Certainty! That in which there is no doubt!
That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above,
working the miracles of one [thing]. As all things were from One.
Its father is the Sun and its mother the Moon.
The Earth carried it in her belly, and the Wind nourished it in her belly,
as Earth which shall become Fire.
Feed the Earth from that which is subtle,
with the greatest power. It ascends from the earth to the heaven
and becomes ruler over that which is above and that which is below.
Bolded the second line because it's occurring to me, if this is a latter work housing a quote from the Emerald Tablet, then the Emerald Tablet must be the earliest known source of "as above, so below" (?).
I've dabbled in trying to understand or work with the concept (and potential subsequent reality) of 'the Philosopher's Stone' (which is considered to be a substance that is all around us, yet unknown to us) since about the age of 16, and every time I end up being too lazy to get anywhere with it, but I'm just now learning that the Emerald Tablet is considered the source material for all things alchemical and magical and so forth, in that it was the first (or only enduring) attempt to consolidate whatever existed at the time as far as ancient Hermetic texts go.
There's something about the connection between Gold and immortality.
I can't find the source for this, but I read somewhere (how's that for reliable) that the goldrush back in the day, or human's obsession for gold at large, come from the 'fact' that we were literally engineered to find gold for a race of aliens who understand its deeper properties and effects. On its face it sounds absurd, but fiction aside, the very idea of it hints at something, I feel.
