I've been reading around and people are really hard on Prince's estate, bitching about how they don't release enough stuff, or they don't release "the right" stuff...
And I kinda disagree. I think they've been doing okay with releases.
There's so much material in the vault to go through, and it takes a lot of special processing. If it's on tape, it's gotta be converted to digital and so on.
Besides man...
I kinda get the feeling that Prince probably had A LOT of risque material in the vault. He even admitted so, but I think it's crazier than people might have expected.
I mean, imagine it...
Prince dies, you get into the vault, and it's just full of crazy raunchy sex music, AND "conspiracy theorist" stuff that is trying to tell the truth about the system.
You'd be between a rock and a hard place.
Is it even appropriate to release some crazy dirty music by Prince?? Like, how dirty are we talking here?? Is that even acceptable??
And what about all the "truth telling" that must be in those archives?? How are they gonna release THAT?? Especially without putting a huge target on their backs and pissing off the establishment, come on. It's nearly an impossible position to be in.
I feel like this is probably what happened.
They got into the vault and started exploring and realized it's a ton of hardcore shit in every direction.
I think it should all be released regardless of the content and who it'll offend, but one thing is absolutely certain... it will be revolutionary.

Imagine you're Prince, you're feeling some type of way, you have all the equipment you need to record basically anything (music or video), you can play basically every instrument, you can do it ALL by yourself...
You'd probably record some super crazy shit.
If he was really a collector of these "conspiracy theory" books (um, he was) then he probably has whole albums "theorizing" about aliens, alternative history, and all other kinds of woo-woo shit.
And I personally wanna hear it. All of it. Now.

I notice some of his albums from the mid-90s onward really peg out the volume levels, almost like nobody was really that focused on EQ. Which is totally possible given what Susan Rogers said about telling him not to look at the levels while he was playing.
If he did a lot of his later work by himself, it'd make sense that there wasn't much attention to detail in some aspects of the process.
Looking at his album covers...

From 2009 on, he pretty much stopped using glamor photos of himself for his album covers.
He'd have been 51 in 2009. Maybe he felt like he was getting too old to take that approach anymore.
But that's nonsense, he was a beautiful man til the day he died. His looks never tanked, but maybe he thought they were. Who knows.
You could even look at some of those last album covers and say they were a tad lazy. I don't necessarily think they were, but they definitely looked rather artificial, especially beginning with the "Art Official Age" album in 2014. Maybe that's the whole point. Maybe he was just making a statement.
I feel like he wanted to shift and change directions somehow near the end of his life. Wonder what those album covers would have been like, and what the content of the songs would have been if he'd known he was going to die. Perhaps he did know. Part of me thinks he did.

I'm thinking a lot of that music in the vault is basically musical porno. For real.

Which sounds very intriguing. But to release such material from a legendary artist like Prince... it would be historic. Truly.
Nobody's ever done some shit like that before. Not really. Especially not someone as big as he was.
To think that he's gonna keep blowing peoples' minds LONG after he's dead is just astonishing man. If the estate even releases it, of course.

You know they wanna protect his image and the legacy in general, not just out of respect for him, but to make sure he doesn't get posthumously cancelled and negatively impact their bottom line.
They're playing it safe. But maybe they've got damn good reason to, all things considered.

I bet there are layers upon layers to this. I bet even his most devoted fans and the freethinkers among them would be shocked by what's really in that vault.

This is the unedited, unaltered version of Purple Rain, which was later edited in studio (verse removed, string section added) and became the album version.
Fucking insane yo.
Look how sweaty he is.
He went fucking harrrd right before this performance.
Historical video right here.

My favorite Prince era aesthetically. There's nothing better than natural hair, I'm glad he let us bask in the glory of it one more time before he left.

If ever any rock star deserved for people to truly lose their shit over them, it was Prince. It still is.

The more I study Prince, the more I realize he always knew they were coming for him.
And I mean, really it's not that surprising that they would be.
But my God, just look at this man. The beauty, the charm, the talent, the photogenic quality of his literal every move and his every expression...
I want to be obsessed with Prince for the rest of my life. For real. I go through seasons of obsession with one person/thing or another, but Prince is a goldmine on every level.
It's like... rewarding to be obsessed with Prince.

3:34 the Prince symbol elevator button and what he starts saying after that... come the fuck on. Just come on. Seriously.
