The Bob Newhart Show (1972 - 1978)

The Bob Newhart Show is a sitcom about Chicago psychologist Bob Hartley and his wife Emily, a fifth grade schoolteacher. Bob and Emily have no children.

Most of the action takes place at Bob and Emily's high-rise apartment and at Bob's office, with frequent scenes at an unnamed restaurant. The same waiter, played by Jack Bernardi, appears in several episodes.

Bob and Emily's neighbors include Howard Borden, a daft airline navigator who regularly shows up at the Hartleys' apartment at breakfast time, and Margaret Hoover, a housewife with four kids.

The receptionist on the floor of the office building where Bob works is a tall redhead with a toothy grin named Carol Kester. She works for several professionals who have offices on that floor, including Bob, an orthodontist named Jerry Robinson, and urologist Bernie Tupperman.

Newhart's stammer is a signature part of his schtick from his standup career onward, and the subtitles capture it. On the down side, the subtitles often reveal what the characters are going to say before they say it, e.g., after a pause for comedic effect, which tends to spoil the gag at times.

Emily frequently wears low-cut dresses with her small tiddies squished together, as if by a pushup bra. She's the only character to have a wardrobe designer named in the closing credits.

The regular cast:

Bob Newhart as Bob Hartley
Suzanne Pleshette as Emily Hartley
Bill Daily as Howard Borden
Marcia Wallace as Carol Kester
Peter Bonerz as Jerry Robinson

Bill Daily is perhaps best known for his earlier role as Major Healey in I Dream of Jeannie.

In the first season, it's revealed that Emily has a fear of flying, and Bob is unable to tell his mother that he loves her.

I loved this show.

Just like Bill Daily played my favorite character in "I Dream of Jeannie", he also played my favorite character in The Bob Newhart Show.

He was gorgeous, always played a pilot/sky captain, and there's nothing sexier than that.

I also have Bob Newhart's autograph.

It's among the most prized in my collection... absolutely stunning.

The amount of plaid and brownish colors in 70s clothing and decor was oppressive. lol

I love those warm tones... it's my favorite part of the '70s aesthetic.

Newhart and Pleshette reprised their roles as Bob and Emily Hartley in the series finale of Newhart (1990).
