Quote:Once, Alex was given several different colored blocks. Pepperberg asked him, "What color three?" expecting him to say blue. However, as Alex had been asked this question before, he seemed to have become bored. He answered "five!" This kept occurring until Pepperberg said "Fine, what color five?" Alex replied "none". This was said to suggest that parrots, like humans, get bored. Sometimes, Alex answered the questions incorrectly, despite knowing the correct answer.
In July 2005, Pepperberg reported that Alex understood the concept of zero. If asked the difference between two objects, he also answered that; but if there was no difference between the objects, he said "none", which meant that he understood the concept of nothing or zero.
Alex's death on 6 September 2007, at age 31, came as a surprise, as the average life span for a grey parrot in captivity is 45 years. His last words ("You be good, I love you. See you tomorrow.") were the same words that he would say every night when Pepperberg left the lab.

There are a lot of bleeding hearts in the comments of that last video about Alex saying he was super unhappy and this was emotional abuse and all this kinda shit...
These are probably the same kind of people who don't eat meat, but they're fine with eating plants when it's been proven plants can communicate too.
I'm just saying...
That parrot had a fine life and benefited science and the further understanding about how intelligent animals really are.
It's about time humanity learned that they're not the only intelligent life here.

I had a parrot when I was a kid, and I know first hand that they understand context when it comes to what they're saying.
I also don't believe they should EVER be kept as pets. Maybe if they live with a pirate on a tropical island or something...
But otherwise, no. No way. Birds should never be kept as pets. There are a lot of animals that should not be kept as pets.

It could be argued that Alex's early death may have been attributed with his overall dissatisfaction, and hey, maybe it was...
But I think the study done on him was important for the world.
