That seems to be the most likely explanation. If the smell is preferred, it must be because they associate it with a generally pleasant life experience... maybe just younger and more carefree days, or perhaps a girlfriend they liked.

Jergens was immensely popular back in the day. Jergens and Vaseline Intensive Care were pretty much the only two well-known brands. Everyone had one or the other in their bathroom. I’d never heard of Aveeno until maybe the late 80s or early 90s.
