Okay, that makes more sense. The thing is black and brown bears do climb trees, so bows and arrows are not completely full proof if the bear charges you.

I've seen stuff about his story.

I think the safest way is to be near your car or house when shooting a bear, in order to be able to retreat.

I know people use dogs to distract the bear, when they actual go into bear territory to hunt them.
