But deep down inside I just have this feeling that they are essentially slaves to these puppetmasters.

As if, one time long ago, each one of them found themselves in a situation, and had a choice between good and evil...

And they chose the choice of evil with its perks and whatnot, out of ignorance or fear or weakness.

Then over time, they did the deeds and played the game until they completely lost themselves in it, and now they are elderly, senile, and have spent their lives under the thumb of evil.
